Any polycrystalline material, after processing, acquires a crystallographic texture or preferred orientation of the constituent grains, which is characteristic of the processing history, as well as of the material itself. As texture affects all material properties, it is essential to understand texture evolution in a material and its modification, as a function of processing. Research in the area of texture started nearly a century ago, and Knowledge and activity in this area has grown tremendously, over the years, due to contributions coming from researchers of several countries, and from many disciplines of science and technology. India's was a rather late entry in this world endeavour; however, sustained activity in the country, for the last five decades, has put India firmly on the Texture map of the world. This presentation is an attempt to chronicle the fascinating story of the global effort in texture research, from the beginning till date, with special reference to the author's journey through the tumultuous early days of texture research in India, and the joys and sorrows he experienced.
